[Fynn can't help but chuckle to himself once he gets this message. It seems that the mysterious Retrospec app has struck again! He's not too surprised. This damn app is causing more harm than good for most people. He's certain he'll be next on the list of victims betrayed by this damn app.]

[Togusa breathes out a very long sigh, because now he has to explain, but how much to put over the network.]

This was about a year ago, Kato was a high school student, daughter of immigrants. She vanished, and it got designated a runaway and never really followed up on internally.
You ever run across Detective Piper? He moved to a different city at the start of this year. Could never prove it, but was always kind of an extra jerk to me and Lou and Sakakura and Kuzuryu? If you know what I'm getting at?
[It takes a minute for Fynn to understand what this case is all about but he's following well enough even if he doesn't like the implication. An immirgrant girl who allegedly ran away and a seedy detective? Yeah, that doesn't sound good.]

Yup. DO NOT google it. It has some seriously fucked up content in it.
But. Piper was the person who ended up in charge of the case. I only ended up finding out about it at all because I was the first response when the parents called the cops. I had to report it up the chain and Piper took over, and he ignored my concern that maybe it wasn't just a runaway case.
Just, looking at her emails, the communication with the person she was supposed to be meeting, it didn't add up. She was still trying to be polite to someone who was claiming to be her countryman, but brushed off every single attempt to meet in person.
Piper didn't want to hear it. But, then I started trying to look into it myself, and that pissed Piper off. So he reported me, and I got reprimanded.
Thank whatever omnipotent being that exists then! I was getting really worried for a min.

But then the feds found her two states away a week later with a group of girls being prepped to be sent out of the country. Kato's family left Recolle when she was found, and went all the way back to Japan.
But by that point, it was a federal case, there was never any kick back to Recolle unless you were specifically trying to follow up on it. Which I was, because her parents were talking to me, and not Piper, reason number two he got pissed.
Pretty sure Piper knew and just never said anything about it. And then shipped off for a promotion. So, that was really the end of it.
You got robbed, Togusa. Definitely. You could've had that case solved way before the Feds jumped in. It's kind of odd that Piper got in the way like that all for the sake of a promotion.
I didn't make a big deal of it at the time because I was coming up for my next review. I saw the possibility for at least getting considered for extra training for Detective. But the most recent thing on everybody's mind was me not doing my job.
It just feels like something I don't have the right to be angry about anymore because it did turn out the right way. A girl who was in trouble is safe and back with her family and okay. I just didn't have anything to do with it.
At the end of the day, it's not about the promotion or pay. It's about the "people" we meet and those we can help along the way. I want to make detective someday but I'm not putting that goal ahead of my job.
It's "protect and serve" not "help yourself". I just want to do my job and be damn good at it. Most of the blokes on the force are too busy chasing a bigger paycheck than to give a damn.
[It is a very long time before Togusa can muster up a reply to that. Also, because it turns out he's having a second conversation about this very same subject. But, finally, he comes back.]
